A new published article in the International Journal of Pharmaceutical Compounding discusses suspensions as a valuable alternative for compounded capsules with respect to content uniformity. A total of 5,190 samples using 74 different APIs were analysed according to USP and BP monographs for content uniformity and it was found that the mean acceptance values were well within specifications. On the contrary, various studies have shown that even though compounded capsules might meet the weight variation requirements, the content may not be within specification.
This is the first study that has extensively evaluated the content variation of oral liquid suspensions and this study shows that this dosage form is a great choice when a (precise) oral dose is required.
