Following the public consultation on the use of methylisothiazolinone (MI), the European Commission (EC) now announced the ban for the use of MI in leave-on products as of 12 February 2017. In 2013 the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) already concluded that 0.01% (100 ppm) MI in cosmetic products is not safe for consumers.
For leave-on products no safe concentration of MI can be defined. This in combination with a dramatic increased incidence of MI induced allergies has led to the ban. The ban of MI in leave-on products by the EC underlines the importance of ingredient safety.
